Obesity Help
I offer obesity help to you because I
have struggled with obesity first hand. It is a
challenging and embarrassing condition, and it WILL kill you if you don't
do something about it.
My Story
It seems like just the smell of food makes me gain weight. I have many
relatives with weight problems. It runs in the family. Over time, I
developed a lack of self confidence as I tried to "eat better" and
failed time and time again. I finally realized that my biggest problem
was that I no longer believed myself when I made resolutions or goals.
They seemed like lies to me because I knew I wouldn't stick with them.
At work they started a health campaign to help control health care
costs. As part of the campaign, they did a blood draw. My blood analysis
showed that I had fatty liver disease! I couldn't believe
it. In addition, I also had high cholesterol, high
triglycerides, slightly elevated blood pressure, and was on the verge of becoming insulin
resistant. I was on a sure path to diabetes, heart failure, and liver
failure. I knew that over the last 5 years I had gained an extra 50
pounds. But, I'm only 26. I thought I was way too young to have a
disease from my obesity! I was wrong. I learned an important and hard
lesson; obesity starts killing you the minute you start packing those
extra pounds.
I did a lot of research and found that it was possible for me to die
very young if I didn't start doing something about my weight. I thought
about my beautiful wife and two wonderful children and decided that it
was time to take action. It wasn't ever going to be easier than now.
I knew that a "diet" would just be a quick fix, and was not the
solution to my problem. I not only needed to lose weight, I needed to
keep it off and get healthy. I needed a plan to keep me healthy for
years to come. You see, a diet is what we eat every day and not
something we "go on". We can have a nutritious diet, or we can eat a
diet consisting of junk food. I realized that I needed a diet plan that
was comprehensive enough and flexible enough to allow me to safely lose
weight, and keep it off for the rest of my life. I created such a plan.
Diet was only half of the equation. The other half was to get up off of
the couch and get moving; I needed a little exercise. The trick was to
find something that I enjoyed that I could do on a daily basis. I considered a treadmill, an elliptical,
a stationary bike, exercise videos, dancing, running, walking,
swimming, biking, wii fit, racquetball, tennis, rock climbing, skiing,
etc, etc. But I had to find an exercise that I could enjoy and
do at home in the mornings while my
children were asleep. I went out and bought the best quality elliptical
that I could afford. I figured that money invested in my own health now
would save me thousands of dollars in the future.
My next step was to find some support. The holidays were coming to a
close and my mom and sister were also looking for a little motivation
to get healthy. We talked together and came up with the Jentzsch Family
Health Challenge: a six week family contest with prizes for the
winners. My sister, Kyla, and I devised a point system to score our
contest. Since I am a computer man by trade, I created a spreadsheet
that would automatically give us a score and estimate calories based on
what foods we ate and how much we exercised.
With the constant support of those around me, especially my wife
Catherine, I began to lose weight. I also made some amazing findings. I
could lose weight at a healthy rate of 2 pounds per week without cutting
out the foods I loved! I ate pizza, hamburgers, ice cream, cheese cake,
cookies, etc. I just kept them under control. I learned to stay within
my "calorie budget". I cooked more often and ate more gourmet! To my
surprise, I found that "health food" does not have to be expensive. Was
this the life that I was dreading all these years? It wasn't bad at
all. In fact, I enjoyed it.
Of course, not every day holds a victory. But, as I tracked what I
ate, I quickly learned about my downfalls and "food triggers". Food
triggers are things (mostly events for me) that trigger eating out of
control. As I identified my food triggers, I learned to control or
avoid these situations. Obesity Help For You- Causes of Obesity: The first step in fighting obesity is to identify the causes. You need to know what you are fighting against.
